Schaffer Supporters Assault Protester?

  • by: Colorado Pols

From the Grand Junction Sentinel’s Political Notebook blog:

When Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer walked under the shaded picnic area at Hawthorne Park to deliver his public address, two protestors took the opportunity to roll out a $1 million check from “Iraq Profiteers, Inc.” to the candidate.

The check, hand delivered by Richard Crispin and Jaynie Curington and pictured below, is made out to “Big Oil Bob” Schaffer and signed by Vice President Dick Cheney, who recently came to Grand Junction to raise money for the Republican Senate contender.

Crispin, Curington and Schaffer’s “check” lasted about five seconds before local Republican Gary Brewer and Mesa County Republican Party Chairman Gary Roahrig grabbed it and placed it in the trash. (Brewer’s grab was so forceful, in fact, it tore the check.)

Schaffer told the crowd he was upset to hear the protesters – whom he said were released from an “asylum” – shout and swear following the check episode.

“This is the way they campaign. This is the way we campaign,” Schaffer said to cheers from his supporters. [Pols emphasis]

We’re not civil rights lawyers, but something about this doesn’t look right to us. Did that guy have the right to rip this placard out of that kid’s hands in a public park? Were police on hand, either to protect Schaffer’s event from disruption or to prevent Schaffer supporters from getting physical?

Interesting anyway, we’ll see if this becomes something more than a brief entry on a small-market newspaper’s political blog. Seems to us like it probably should.

  1. But the reaction was equally rude. And what is up with Bob’s comment? “This is the way they campaign?” What the hell? As if Mark Udall sent them as his proxy? A protest is not a campaign stop, Bob.

They shouldn’t have interrupted Bob’s speech–chanting to the side waving the giant check is a good enough protest–but any kind of physical assault on them should be prosecuted.

I was thinking that the protesters should be charged with forgery (Dick Cheney’s signature) and passing a bad check on a non-existent account. Makes as much sense as believing they were physically assaulted.

    1. It would have more to do with ripping the sign violently out of his hands than the value of the sign to be considered assault. Did he get a paper cut? It’s a litigious world.

    1. These “supporters” of Schaffer seem to be getting violently worse as the campaign continues.

First it was a “slightly more-than-usual physical confrontation” with Schaffer supporters using their mega-phones in Udall supporters ears while shoving one another.

Then there was the Colorado Springs debate were Schaffer supporters claimed to be “guarding” the parking lot by turning Udall supporters away…. even those with wheelchair license plates.

      And now we have this.

I’m sure DICK Wadhams confrontational words like shoving ads up another man’s ass has nothing to do with it.

Speaking of which, there seem to be a lot of ads attacking Udall, but not from Schaffer’s campaign. In fact Schaffer’s campaign has only aired one really pathetic ad.

Could it be DICK Wadhams is coordinating with outside organizations to shove ads up Udall’s ass for him?

      1. There were many more reported incidences of Bush & Republican supporters resorting to violent than Kerry & Democrat.  Not just somewhat more, like on the orders of magnitude.  Very telling.

  2. …such a big crowd!

I’m no lawyer, but this would seem to meet some of the basic requirements of assault and/or battery…

“Assault is often defined to include not only violence, but any physical contact with another person without their consent. In common law jurisdictions, including England and Wales and the United States, battery is the crime that represents the unlawful physical contact, though this distinction does not exist in all jurisdictions. Exceptions exist to cover unsolicited physical contact which amount to normal social behavior known as de minimis harm.”

Not sure how the C.R.S. defines it though.

          1. …and lick his wounds or end up living in one of run-down properties cooking meth?

I suppose he’ll get some wing-nut welfare.  Hopefully something that lets him talk freely.  Bruce and Caldera–now that would be a team!

      1. “Come down to the park in Portland and see me” type of invitations?  There were only 200,000 people there with no limitations on party affiliation or anything else (except that you couldn’t be carrying a gun or otherwise wanting to kill a Presidential candidate…)

Or maybe “Sign up on our website to see Obama at Invesco Field”…  I note that some of the Republican posters on this blog will be attending the last night of the Democratic Convention to see Obama speak.

        Your post is ridiculous.

  3. if Schaffer and his people had ignored the protesters completely, probably nobody other than those at the event would have known the protesters were there. Instead, Schaffer and his people responded (took the bait) and it ends up on the Sentinel’s blog and ColoradoPols and who knows where else.

    Really stupid.

    1. …that this was rather inflammatory.  I mean, a check from Cheney!  That is intoleralble on its face!  Bound to inspire resentment and bitterness.

  4. you’d also know they could easily plead diminished mental capacity and get away with whatever criminal activity they could be charged with.  Especially with our DA who refuses to prosecute right wing nutbags.

  5. I know this is a liberal site, but must you try to smear Schaffer every single day?  This is a nothing story.  I’m so sick of all these people jumping in people’s faces then crying that they are victims.  Boring.

Why not any discussion on the dozens of constitutional amendments that will actually affect people’s lives in a big way, for good or bad?  Tons of fodder there . . .

    1. this discussion, the next diary down, which has a whopping two comments, including a grand total of zero from you?

Since the protesters didn’t “cry that they are victims,” but the law-and-order candidate did manage a smug “atta boys” for his thugs, I’d say your “sickness” is either feigned or misplaced.

There’s a right to wave giant checks at candidates. There isn’t a right to terminate a protest by force.

      1. As a former POW, he deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to verbal slips, extramarital affairs and the desire to have more houses than he can count. How dare you question — oh, wait, that’s the other guy. Go ahead with the Schaffer bashing, he’s just a pampered tool of the oil and charter school industries.

          1. The unions are a large part of the problem – but the parents are equally culpable. And who gives the unions total control? The school boards. And who elects those boards? We do.

Look in the mirror Laughing Boy – you’re part of the problem too.

          2. NCLB and CSAP have really done nothing. Charter Schools have laundered millions of dollars, and those are your answers? The corporatization of our education system is not the answer as proven over the last few decades!

            1. 30% minority graduation rate from DPS.

30% minority graduation rate from DPS.

30% minority graduation rate from DPS.

              Eventually you will get it.

                    1. Because the demographics are changing and hispanics will not be the minority in the US population (at least in Colorado) in 40-50 years, probably.

          3. Come on, LB!  That’s over the top. Yes, unions are part of the problem, but 100%?

From my vantage point (ex-teacher, mum was, too) a lot of the problems are related to huge numbers of non-English speakers, disinterested parents, and other systemic matters.

Schools in upper class white/Asian neighborhoods seem to do quite well, thank you.

            1. At least in Colorado, the CEA is the biggest union in the State, and Education is the biggest expenditure in the budget.

Union-owned politicians like Mike Merrifield are in charge of Education Committees and union -bought candidates win nearly every school board election in Colorado.

They might not be 100% of the problem in their existence, but their inability to make changes that would be positive for students, yet negative to their ability to hold on to all the power are not made.

                1. to make changes at Bruce Randolph.

                  That’s kind of my point.

Also, how much room do they get?  Every year is another group of thousands of kids dumped into society with no chance.

              1. Yes, in the general fund budget, education outspends health related expenses 2:1. Interestingly enough, prison spending is almost equal to human services.

Please interpret this breakdown of the CO budget, helping myself, and I’m sure others on this blog, understand your perspective on how certain of our tax dollars are utilized.
